He holed a 90-ft birdie putt from off the green on the second day to beat Kevin Kisner, and after advancing to the knockout stages came through matches against Byeong Hun An and Ryan Moore before losing to Louis Oosthuizen in the semi-finals. He defeated Rory McIlroy in the third place match, however, and an additional consolation was guaranteeing a debut appearance in the Masters Tournament two weeks later. With six top ten finishes in 2016, he also made his Ryder Cup debut for Europe where he went undefeated from his three matches, with the Spaniard and his countryman Sergio Garcia winning one and halving one of their matches over the first two days, before he overcame Jimmy Walker 3&2 in the singles. He claimed his second European Tour victory in 2012 at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, where he held off McIlroy and Lee Westwood, among others. Rafa grew up next to a golf course in the Canary Islands, and his sister Emma competes on the Ladies European Tour. He owns a house in Bali, where he loves to spend time surfing.
